Crop Mob – Burge Organic Farm: A Blast from the Past

Well guys, we had such an awesome time at Indian Ridge Farm, we thought we should get more mobbing in this month. That’s why we’re doubling your pleasure and doubling your fun with TWO mobs this month. Our first will be August 15th at the scenic Burge Organic Farm in Mansfield, GA and the second…well…we’ll get back to you on that one shortly.

The Farm

So Burge Organic Farm! Not only is this place beautiful, but it’s been in family hands for seven generations and has an incredibly rich history dating back to 1809. The Burge Plantation itself is over 2,000 acres of beautiful land, and the certified organic farm sprawls over an impressive 16 acres — so we’ve got our work cut out for us!

Cory Mosser is the awesome farm manager at Burge; you may have seen him selling something awesome and delicious at the Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market. Between throwing out his back and having a new baby in the family, it’s been a busy time for Cory. But if this mob is anything like the ones we’ve had so far, we can make up for his lost time in a snap!

The Mob

We’ll send out a reminder as the 15th gets closer to let you know what exactly we’ll be up to and if we’ll need any special skills or equipment. But we do know that Miller Union will be providing food again (you can start doing the “happy belly” dance now) so remember to bring reusable plates and utensils. We’re kind of a tree-hugging lot, so let’s try and remember stuff we don’t have to chuck at the end of the meal. And don’t forget water, sunscreen, hats, etc. All the good stuff to keep you safe in the scorching Georgia August heat.

We’ll be starting at 9AM to try and beat the heat a little, but the farm is just a little under an hour east of the city, so you won’t have to get up TOO too early on Sunday, just a little too early.

Good news! We’ve been asked to cap this mob at 75, so the more the merrier! Plus, if you don’t snag a spot for this one, there’s another on the way. Each mob keeps getting better and better; let’s keep the trend going! Can’t wait to see you and make some more history at Burge Organic Farm!

Indian Summer

Indian Summer

It remains to be seen if we’ll have an Indian summer this year, but we know one thing for sure: it was a deep south summer day at Indian Ridge Organic Farm this past Sunday. Over the day, the heat index climbed upwards of 103. But did that stop us? Heck no! Didn’t even slow us down! After a scenic hike around the gorgeous property (think horses, wooded paths and a breathtaking farmhouse) we showed up at the fields already sweating through our clothes and ready to go.

Some first-time mobbers had a trial by fire (almost literally) and did GREAT. You should have seen the areas we cleared in no-time flat. We were lucky enough to have a mid-morning refreshment of iced coffee and goodies from Cafe Campesino – and it was exactly what we needed. At that point, the heat was so intense that I pretty much expected most mobbers to chill out in the shade until lunch. But no, not this crew. After a brief break, it was right back to work in the mid-day sun. We worked straight through until the smell of frying catfish called everyone in. That’s right – Miller Union did it again with an old school fish fry complete with the world’s most amazing hush puppies, field pea and tomato salad, coleslaw and watermelon. It’s funny how a staggeringly good meal can make you forget the heat. Darby announced the first of two August mobs (stay tuned for more info on those) and we all got a chance to unwind a little from a great day of work.

And then, we discovered the best feature of Indian Ridge Farm: the Soque River runs through it. Most. Refreshing. River. Ever. We all had a heck of a good time splashing around, cooling down, and sipping on some of Mike’s famous homebrew. Check us out – cool as cucumbers – at the end of the video!

It was a great one. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: our mobbers are the best. We work hard, we play hard and we get a couple of months worth of farmwork done in the process.

Keep an eye out for details on next month’s mobs!

Carpooling to Indian Ridge

Carpooling to Indian Ridge

Alright, guys, we’re gonna try this out as a solution. Let’s meet at the following Whole Foods locations, all pile into cars together and head up to the farm: Ponce, Buckhead – W. Paces Ferry, Sandy Springs (Roswell Rd. & Hammond) and Alpharetta (which is technically a Harry’s). Be sure to park toward the back of the lot so we don’t irk the nice WF folks. Also, be kind and maybe do some shopping when you return to get your car.

Try and get there between 7:30-7:45AM with the hopes of hitting the road at 8 and getting to the farm at 9:30. Be sure to bring some directions along (a link to a map is below). Don’t forget to bring swim attire and a musical instrument if you want in addition to your common-sense goods (lots of water, sunscreen, gloves, etc). Also, if you think about it and are on Facebook, shoot us a message letting us know which WF you plan to be at. We just want to make sure no one gets stuck at a Whole Foods all by their lonesome.

Get excited! We’ll be weeding, weeding, seeding, weeding, and building a few things for the farm including a shed and potentially a permanent garden cat condo for the farm cats if everything else gets done…I, for one, think that’s awesome). This one’s sure to be a blast. But it’s also sure to be hot. Start hydrating now!

Can’t wait to see you there!

Why we love Miller Union

Why we love Miller Union

Atlanta’s Westside has only recently transformed into the hip, up-and-coming spot that it is today. Many Atlantans remember when that area was little more than industrial wasteland with a handful of interior design stores scattered about. But what very few remember are the days it was full of cattle and horses. That’s right: the Westside used to be the heart of the city’s livestock trade. And at the center of it all stood the Miller Union Stockyards.

Fast forward a hundred years to the hotspot Westside we know today and you’ll still find Miller Union, only now it’s a locavore’s dream restaurant with a nod to the location’s history. The brainchild of Steven Satterfield and Neal and Carolyn McCarthy, the restaurant opened to much acclaim in 2009 and has continually gained in popularity ever since. With a dedication to farm-to-table cooking (you can find Chef Steven at the farmer’s market nearly every Saturday) and a clean, warm and intimate decor, Miller Union’s approach to dining is as welcoming and comfortable as it is unique. Unlike some of the nouveau cuisine trends, Miller Union serves food you’ve had before – meals reminiscent of the homecooked memories of an idyllic youth – foods you may even cook at home yourself. With one exception: these are the best incarnation of these dishes you will have ever tasted.

It may seem like a tall order, but every dish I’ve eaten from Miller Union I’ve had hundreds of time in my life. And, without fail, MU’s take on it has elevated it to gourmet cuisine. A southern influence informs the food without being too heavy. The Feta Snack is a great, bright way to start your meal. The trout is remarkably fresh and twice as delicious. Three words: Creamy. Grit. Fritters. Seriously, they’re as good as they sound and then some. And now that the restaurant is serving lunch as well, there’s no reason not to find a time to go.

Plus Miller Union is dedicated to creating a sense of community. Beyond its commitment to buying local and working with small-scale, sustainable farmers, the restaurant also hosts Harvest Dinners every third Tuesday to let patrons share a communal meal family style at a large table and actually get to know one another, an element of dining that few restaurants offer. Additionally, every Friday this summer is part of the Summer Sunset Series with a special bar menu between 5 and 7 (including the aforementioned grit fritters and the equally life-changing fried okra).

But the community effort that has touched us most has been Miller Union’s unbelievable generosity toward Crop Mob. From the group’s inception, MU has been there every step of the way for support, encouragement, and out of this world meals. In fact, that’s been a highlight of every mob. Tired, hot faces suddenly perk up when they see Steven and the MU crew start setting up lunch. We’ve enjoyed the best chicken salad ever, the best pulled pork ever, the best potato salad ever, the best farro salad ever and so many more “best evers.” Oh, and the pecan sandies are like crack.

Rumor tends to spread in the morning about what’s for lunch and remains a major conversation topic throughout the day. And the opportunity to share a meal together – not to mention such a delicious one – really solidifies the sense of friendship that grows over several hours of hard work together. Crop Mob wouldn’t be the same without Miller Union’s contributions. So thanks, Miller Union. We love you.

Crop Mob – Indian Ridge Farm

Crop Mob – Indian Ridge Farm

Hey Mobbers!

Hope you had a fantastic 4th of July complete with fireworks, BBQ or whatever tradition you like best. We’ve got another way for you to appreciate our nation — from the dirt up.

Come help the farmers at Indian Ridge Farm get the place in tip top shape at the end of July. Yeah, we know it’ll be hot, but that’s why we’re heading up into the mountains to a farm with a built in water-park (you know, rivers and lakes and such). So bring your swimsuit, your sunscreen, and those muscles you forget you have until you spend a day with a shovel in your hand and come play with us on the 25th! We’ll let you know a little closer to the date what to expect in terms of jobs and if we’re on the hunt for any special skillsets. Plus, we’ll get the absolute joy of having Miller Union provide food AGAIN! They’re kind of our heroes. Y’all have to check out the restaurant if you haven’t yet. It’s good. REAL good.

So more to come on the Indian Ridge Mob! We’ve been asked to cap this one at 50, and we’ll try to organize some carpool magic before we head up there.

And now, a word from Thomas Jefferson: “Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous and they are tied to their country and wedded to its liberty and interests by the most lasting bands.”

We’ll have Crop Mob ATL shirts for sale at the event. They are $15 (cash or paypal will be accepted).

Can’t wait to see you guys soon!

Sheik Burritos Mob Recap

Sheik Burritos Mob Recap

The mini-mob at Sheik Burritos n Kabobs was a success. We came, we saw, we dug up rocks the size of small children and artifacts that had been buried for who-knows-how-long (doorknobs, tires, tiles, seashells, windshield wipers and more). We created the foundations for a stellar restaurant garden out of a forgotten chunk of land on Piedmont. We got to know some new mobbers. We ate some kickin’ Persian/Southwestern fusion burritos – and we all got to choose our favorite type, too! In short, we conquered – and it felt good.

In just a couple of hours, we began the long process of amending that inner-city soil into what will be a fertile bed of fresh ingredients. We created rows that Jahan, the owner and super cool mobber, will improve with some compost and a season or two of cover crop. We even helped create some preliminary ideas for a basic irrigation system to keep the crops happy and prevent them from being washed downhill in the rain.

It was fun to have a mob in the city, and allowed some people who haven’t been to a mob before to make it out. We even have some ideas for our August mob in the works (but we’ll let you know more about that as the details come together)! And – along with the company and the locations – we also had a luxury at the Sheik that mobbers rarely enjoy: SHADE!

So check back soon for info on our July mob – we can’t wait to see you all again at Indian Ridge Farm!

Stay cool out there!
